I would like to extend a warm welcome to all families, new and continuing to the 2017 school year. We have experienced continued enrolment growth from last year with our final numbers expected to be between 1160 and 1170. It is pleasing to see the community show its continued confidence in our school through the enrolment of their children!
Good communication is an important key to fostering a strong partnership between school and home. As well as the school’s website we have the free Q School’s App, fortnightly newsletter which comes out at the end of each ‘even numbered’ week and we are frequent users of email and phone contact. Our first newsletter will be emailed home next week.
Often it is difficult to remember all of the information that we need so the school has provided a Diary for every student which contains our policies, procedures and general information. I think it would be very beneficial if all parents familiarized themselves with the Diary.
Throughout the year we will also host a number of parent functions. Invitations are sent either electronically (or in paper form) a few weeks in advance. I urge all families to attend these functions so that they are kept fully informed of what is happening at Ormeau Woods. Our first parent function is on Wednesday 15 February. It is our ‘Meet the Parents Evening’. More information will be sent home closer to the event.
We have a number of important functions occurring in the next few weeks. These include school photos which will be taken on Friday 3 February. Students must be in the formal day uniform, not the sports polo for the photo. Students who aren’t in full formal uniform will not have their photo taken which will slow down the process of when they can get their ID card.
On Tuesday 7 February we have our annual swimming carnival, ‘Splashfest’. This is a fantastic day where students can show their House and School spirit. It is also an ideal opportunity for students to meet and socialize with other students.
To support students and families in planning for the term, each item of assessment has been arranged in a planner specific to year levels. The planner will have the Subject, Assessment Type and Due Date. To access the school planner on the website please follow this link:
If you have instances relating to student absences you may call the Attendance Hotline on 5540 9266, email the school on or send in an explanatory note with your child upon their return to school which is then given to their Form Teacher during Roll Mark.
There will be more information in next week’s newsletter. In the meantime I hope your child has settled in well and is looking forward to the year ahead. Best wishes.
