While homework provides students with opportunities to consolidate their classroom learning and establish behaviours conducive to achievement, the setting of homework also takes into account the need for students to have a balanced lifestyle.
The expectations for homework tasks are differentiated according to a student’s year level, learning needs, career aspirations and subjects being studied. In the Junior Secondary Years of Schooling (Years 7, 8 and 9) it is recommended that students study a maximum of five hours per week.
In the Senior Phase of Learning (Years 10 to 12) the amount of time devoted to homework and independent study will vary according to the individual’s learning pathway determined through their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. It can range from five to 15 or more hours per week. Tertiary bound students will have a more demanding workload and subsequently the homework and study demands will be much higher.
