Most students start by doing personal research on the internet, experiencing a work placement & making an appointment with our Guidance Officer Mr Alan Fraser or Mrs Phillippa Proctor.
School-based apprentices and trainees (SATs), typically for students in years 10, 11 and 12 are trained in the workplace and with a supervising registered training organisation (SRTO), in their chosen apprenticeship or traineeship while continuing to study towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
SATs are not automatic for all who want them - it is a competitive market and students will need to ensure that their school performance positions them to be selected.
Advantages of SATs
Young people employed as SATs develop workplace skills, knowledge, confidence and a competitive edge when applying for jobs
SATs are paid for time spent working with their employer in adapting to a work environment
SATs must participate in vocational training to complete all theory components to complete their Certificate II or III
Receive a qualification that is recognised nationally and recorded as part of the QCE
SATs are funded under the User Choice program and are exempt from paying student contributions fees to the SRTO whilst they are at school
A student's work and/or training must impact on their school timetable for the arrangement to be considered as SATS
Complete a minimum of 375 hours (50 days) per 12 month period
Electrotechnology students must complete 600 hours (80 days) per 12 month period
Entry into Electrotechnology apprenticeships is limited to students in Years 11 and 12 only
Working during school holidays is mandatory for all SATs
Some students complete traineeships whilst they are at school, while others go onto finish their apprenticeship or traineeship either full-time or part-time after they have left school. SATs must not complete in less than 12 months unless they have completed the minimum paid work requirement.
