Dear Parents, Caregivers and School Community,

Welcome to Ormeau Woods State High School. I hope everyone has had a great start to the new year. Whilst we welcome back our existing students, we welcome many new families to our wonderful school this year. We also welcome close to 300 Year 7 students, who completed their first day of high school today. Our school is fortunate to be fully staffed and we have several new outstanding teachers and support staff who have joined our school community. As you may be aware our former Head of Department for The Arts, Mr Terry Antcliffe retired at the end of last year. I would like to congratulate Mrs Michelle Wilson who is our new Arts Head of Department and welcome Mrs Wilson to Ormeau Woods.

This year there are some important changes that you need to be aware of regarding the organisational structure of our school and the supports in place for students. As you are aware, our school has high quality support which was previously offered to students and parents through our innovative ‘House structure’, where students and families were communicated with through a Deputy Principal, Head of House and Student Advisor all in the same House Team.
This year our school has worked on strategies and systems of support to foster a strong focus on student academic performance and of course student success. The structure in 2023 has slightly changed to support this focus.

Students this year, will be supported and case managed through a year level structure, where a Student Advisor, Head of Year and a Deputy Principal have been assigned to a Year Level, rather than a House Team. The addition of a Junior School Principal and a Senior School Principal in our structure, better support the differing priorities of these phases of learning for our students. These leaders are accessible to students for different levels of support and intervention and will be the main people communicating with families regarding support aligned to our UBAA framework (Uniform, Behaviour, Achievement and Attendance).

Our school will still have a strong connection to House Spirit through our House Assemblies and Excellence Pillar Challenges throughout the year. The structural changes now allow for stronger support, communication and consistency for our students.

Thank you always for your ongoing support and best wishes for a great 2023.

Yours sincerely
Daniel Murtas
Principal
